The Berkeley team pulled back to .500 after grinding out a hard fought 6-1 victory over the Manning Monarchs. The match was closer than the final score indicated, with three of the matches going to a third set tiebreaker.
Three Stags earned their first victories as tennis players for the Stags: senior Wonyae Cameron, senior Gabe Wadford, and 7th grader Joshua Giannelli all won their respective matches contributing to the team’s win.
James Giannelli got the Stags off to a good start with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles, giving the Stags a 1-0 lead.
Joshua Giannelli followed his brother’s example, winning 6-2, 6-0, giving the Stags a little cushion going into the remaining matches.
When Graham Jones, playing in his first varsity match, lost at No. 5 singles, the Stags needed at least two more victories to clinch the match.
The No . 2 doubles team of Ridge Baggett and Wonyae Cameron overcame a one set deficit to win their match in a third set tiebreaker (10-6), showing flashes of the potential they have as a team. With this win, the Stags inched closer to the needed 4 points.
After the No. 1 doubles team of the Giannellis won their doubles match and sealed the win for the Stags, two marathon matches remained on the court.
No 4 singles player Gabe Wadford earned his first career win, giving the Stags a 5-1 in a well contested two hour ten minute match, winning his third set tiebreaker 12-10.
No. 3 singles player Hugh Huxford outlasted his opponent after two and a half hours and two set tiebreakers, winning his third set tiebreaker 10-7.
The Stags (1-1) face Hilton Head at home Tuesday to open region play.
