Boys Varsity Football · Region crown within reach

Cane Bay and Berkeley battled for region supremacy as Class AAAA schools the last two seasons and could determine the region champion in their first years as Class AAAAA programs.

Berkeley, ranked inside the Class AAAAA Top 10, is 7-1 overall and 3-0 in region play after cruising past Stratford 51-20, while Cane Bay slipped to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the region with a 24-14 loss to Wando on Friday.

But if the Cobras could get the tiebreaker on Berkeley by winning Friday at CBHS, they would be in great position to wrap up the region crown with a game at James Island on Nov. 2. James Island hasn’t won a region game.

The Stags can reel in the region championship with a win Friday and Goose Creek loss to Stratford. If both Berkeley and Goose Creek win, they will decide the region champion on Nov. 2 in Moncks Corner.

Berkeley has won two straight barnburners in the series with Cane Bay. Last year, the Stags made a field goal then blocked a field goal to survive 30-27 in overtime. A year earlier, Berkeley came out on top 37-29, denying the Cobras inside the 1 in the closing minute.

While Berkeley brought back most of its offense and has proven as potent as any of the top units in the state, Cane Bay had to replace 10 starters on offense and is now on its backup quarterback.

The Cobras average 27 points on offense but have allowed just one point less than what they’ve scored.

In their loss to Wando, quarterback Alex Mart and running back Micah Staggers had touchdown runs in the first half to stake the Cobras to a 14-10 lead. However, the Warriors scored twice in the second half to hand the Cobras their first region loss.

Berkeley entered the season with high expectations and has not disappointed. The Stags are averaging 42 points a game while limiting opponents to 17 points a contest.

Against Stratford, the Stags got 199 yards rushing and a touchdown from Keshawn Wicks. Cam Myers chipped in an 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and receiver Dervon Pesnell had 39 yards receiving and a touchdown.

Running back Damond Navarre added a pair of short touchdown runs and quarterback Eric Tuttle passed for 145 yards and scored on a 1-yard plunge.
